ABOUT BABY BLACK

THE STORY

Baby Black was created by Casselia Goldson, a fashion designer and pattern cutter from North London. Casselia's passion for fashion ignited at the age of 13 when she began teaching herself the basics of clothing construction. This early interest led her to graduate with a HND in Fashion and Design Technology. Her first job in a couture studio honed her craftsmanship, and she went on to work for various designers, studios, and high street stores, specialising in womenswear.
However, everything changed when she started a family. When her first daughter was an infant, Casselia tried to buy her a black dress and quickly realised there weren't many options available. She wondered why. What associations with black deter companies from including it in babywear? Very little research reminded her of the negative connotations tied to the colour black: evil, dirt, bad luck, and death. This made her question, if this is how we view the colour black, how does society view people who identify as such?
Casselia knew she couldn't be the only one who wanted to see more diversity in the childrenswear market and celebrate black not only as a colour but as a culture. This idea sparked the creation of Baby Black; a niche brand filling a gap in the market. Baby Black combines the depth of black with the rich culture of the world's indigenous people, challenging societal definitions and emphasising the importance of language for the youngest members of society.
